Daryel R. Dunston was appointed Oakland's first Homelessness Administrator in 2020 to lead the interdepartmental coordination and response to the growing housing and homelessness crisis in Oakland. He manages personnel and programs dedicated to reducing the incidence of unsheltered homelessness in Oakland, overseeing an operational budget exceeding $50 million.
Daryel’s vast professional experiences are rooted in public service. Prior to his current appointment in the City Administrator’s Office, Daryel served as the Senior Policy Advisor to the Vice Mayor of Oakland before joining Oakland’s Human Services Department to oversee the implementation of all state-funded homelessness programs and services. Before relocating to the Bay Area from Washington, DC, Daryel served as a Sworn Fire Official, Community Organizer, Labor Negotiator, Nonprofit Administrator, and Contributing Writer with the Huffington Post.
Daryel completed his undergraduate studies at the University of Virginia, and he earned his MPA from the Goldman School of Public Policy in 2018. Daryel and his wife have two children, ages seven and three, and they affectionally call the East Bay home.
